What to Expect When You Commission a Horror Illustrator

So, you’ve decided you want original horror illustration for your project. Maybe it’s a book cover, a game, a band poster, or something entirely your own. Whatever it is — commissioning a horror illustrator is one of the best decisions you can make for your project. But if you’ve never done it before, the process can feel a little mysterious.

Here’s exactly what to expect when you commission me.

1. Start with a brief

The first step is getting in touch with a rough idea of what you need. You don’t have to have everything figured out — that’s what I’m here for. But the more detail you can give me upfront, the better. Think about: what’s the project, what’s the mood or tone, what are you using the illustration for, and what’s your deadline?

2. We’ll discuss the details

Once I’ve received your brief, I’ll get back to you to discuss the project in more detail. This is where we talk about style, composition, references, and any specific requirements. It’s also where I’ll give you a quote based on the scope of the work.

3. You’ll receive a contract and invoice

Before any work begins, I’ll send over a contract outlining the scope, timeline, usage rights, and payment terms. A deposit is required upfront — this protects both of us and means I can dedicate proper time to your project.

4. Sketches and feedback

I’ll start with rough sketches to establish the composition and key elements. You’ll have the chance to review and give feedback at this stage before I move into the final artwork. This is the most important stage for making sure we’re both happy with the direction.

5. Final artwork delivery

Once the sketch is approved, I’ll complete the final artwork. The remaining balance is due before the final files are delivered — once payment is received, I’ll send over the high-resolution digital files in the agreed format, suitable for print or screen use.
